Bishop Gorman High School Athletics has a long tradition of successful athletic programs. However, it wasn’t until 1986 that the gym on Bishop Gorman’s campus became known as the House of Glory.
In the late 1980’s and early 90’s during the glory days of UNLV basketball, high school basketball games were broadcast live from various gyms throughout the Valley. “There were probably about 15 teams in Southern Nevada at the time and I bet we did a dozen of the games from Gorman,” said radio personality Seat Williams. KUNV would broadcast the Game of the Week live. “I loved doing the games and the kids loved being on the radio. You never knew who was going to walk in the gym (when you broadcast from Gorman)…Tark or any local celebrity could walk in at any minute. It was exciting.” “One night I was broadcasting from the gym and I was looking up at all the banners on the walls and thinking about the rich tradition at Gorman. It just came out…from then on I would announce ‘live from the House of Glory.’ I guess it stuck.”
It did stick. So much that in the 1990’s Bishop Gorman put the title above the doorway to the gym…and so it became known throughout the Valley as the Gaels “sixth man.” Over the years as new schools were built with massive gyms the House of Glory became even more unique in its intimate and intimidating stature.
The House of Glory hasn’t been home to just basketball games. Dances, assemblies, volleyball matches, wrestling meets, plays, concerts and classes all called the gym home. “The House of Glory is a place where many lessons were learned and memories were made. It is truly a place that will be missed,” commented former basketball player and 1995 “Mr. Gael” Tim O’Reilly.
In the Fall of 2007 Bishop Gorman High School opened a new campus in Summerlin. Along with additional classroom space and state of the art facilities the Gaels will finally have their own athletic complex…complete with practice fields and locker rooms but the House of Glory lives on. The new gym seats more fans but still provides the same excitement and intensity. The tradition of excellence will hang in the rafters as a constant reminder that this IS the House of Glory.
